The Ombudsman's office can investigate issues of unfairness with public organizations that are identified in the Ombudsman Act, referred to as authorities. The list of authorities can be found on our homepage.
Individuals are encouraged to first try and resolve their complaint with the department or organization before coming to the Ombudsman's office. Success is often a result of the following:
- speak with a supervisor/manager of the department or organization
- clearly explain your concern
- ask how and why a decision was made or an action taken
- ask if there is a review or appeal process and pursue it
- treat people respectfully and listen carefully to them
- ask questions if you don't understand
- take notes on who you talk to, what they say, the date, and whether by phone, in-person or online call
- keep copies of all letters, documents, and emails
If you are unable to resolve your complaint in this manner, learn how to make a complaint with our office.
